Property Information
Nestled in a nook of the Jervis Gordon Grist Mill, our Inn offers soothing sounds of the Vantine Brook Dam, with views of the pond and spillway. Walk across the street and enjoy a tour of the Upper Mill, and their shops. Enjoy food and coffee on the patio at the Waterwheel Café. We are less than half a mile to the center of downtown Milford.
Named for Its History:
The Gordon Suite
Jervis Gordon was the first known owner of this property, his name is widely known form the Jervis Gordon Grist Mill, now known as The Upper Mill, located across the street from here. To date, little is known about our property prior to 1874.
It is known that the Upper Mill was built between 1804 and 1837 by James Barton. In 1815, an act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was passed, authorizing James Barton and George Biddis to convey water into the town of Milford using the Vantine Kill.
An act from 1820 regarding the same, states that the “…citizens of Milford are empowered to purchase after 20 years”. It is possible that Jervis Gordon purchased the property around 1840. We are not sure if this location was once part of the Upper Mill, or if it was always a separate property.
We presume Mr. Gordon resided here during this time because the property deed lists the owners as “Jervis Gordon & wife”.
Gordon and his wife sold the property in 1874 to James Quinn, putting in the Deed that Gordon has the right to access the property in order to maintain the dam and race.
The Quinn Suite
James Quinn purchased the property for $200 on June 9, 1874.
This was an exciting time for the town of Milford, less than a year later Milford will hold its first election as a borough, and hold the first meeting of the Borough Town Council.
Mr. Quinn was appointed as the tax collector for Milford on April 25, 1879, it is documented that he was to keep 5% of the taxes as his pay.
The property was passed down through the Quinn Family, ending with Albert Quinn in 1914.
The Ryder Suite
John Ryder and his wife, Ella, purchased the property on December 18, 1914 for a sum described as “$5.00 plus goods”.
John Sr. passed away in 1927, leaving the house to his son, John Jr. The Ryder family owned the property until 1990.
